Joumana Stephan is an architect, urban planner and independent researcher from Beirut, Lebanon. She holds a Master in Architectural Engineering, a PhD in Architecture and Spatial Planning and a PhD in Landscape Architecture. Her research tackles the applications of Systems Science in urban studies, particularly in relation to public space, sustainable urbanism and participatory approaches for urban design and governance. She is interested in adapting interdisciplinary research tools to study urban complexity with a focus on modelling the emergence of urban processes and the synergistic opportunities between them. She approaches urban entities as complex adaptive systems and investigates the role of the systemic language in planning future cities and moving beyond the concept of smart cities.
